As we get some warmer weather and get ready for the weekend, I hope you are all paying very close attention to the safety measures both in and out of school. This includes the travel restrictions, wearing masks, being physically distant, and using lots of sanitizer. One of the main reasons for the statewide rise in COVID cases is due to social gatherings on weekends when people are not following the safety guidelines. By following these guidelines, you will be doing your part to keep us open for in-person instruction. Announcements for today: 1st Quarter will end next week. Please make sure that you have communicated with all of your teachers and have completed your work. Remember, with our semester block schedule, the end of the 1st quarter marks the halfway point in a full credit course, so keeping up with your work and communicating with your teachers is incredibly important. Also, please remember to do your virtual attendance everyday, even the days that you are here in person. This is our official attendance record that we report to the state, so your cooperation is much appreciated. Just a reminder, that we continue to be a closed campus. If you have to leave during the day, you should have a note or have your parent call Tina in the attendance office with the reason. You must also sign in and out for any appointments during the day. Other than pre-arranged excused reasons, there are no sign-outs allowed. School photos and ID’s are here. They have been given to your POD teachers so you can get them during that time. And, in Senior Class news, the Steering Committee is looking for more seniors to participate and help plan for important events like graduation. Seniors. please check your emails for updates on the day and time. Sports: We also now know that Winter Sports, with the exception of track, will be able to happen. Mr. Joyal will be developing guidelines, but the basic idea is that practices can start after Thanksgiving, and games can start on January 11th. The time prior to games starting will be used to determine whether sports can happen safely, and if cases rise, we may wind up losing the season. This means your adherence to safety measures at all times is super important. The VPA will be releasing more sport specific guidelines in the coming days, but here are the main points from the Agency of Education: 1. There will be no spectators allowed for any indoor athletic events. 2. The mask mandate will be in effect this winter and will include officials. 3. Practices may begin on 11/30/20 and games on 1/11/21. 4. There are no team based social gatherings allowed, and 5. The AOE will update these guidelines as needed depending on any Covid related issues. The Athletics Department will be working with coaches and the administration and will put out a Winter Sports Guidance prior to the start of the season that will contain more sport specific information. We have also contacted NSN sports network and we plan to broadcast or stream as many games as possible. Congratulations to Kyle Martin for being named the Caledonian Record Athlete of the Week last week. Kyle was selected based on 9 TD’s in three games - check out the articles on the Cal Record website. Also, I would like to thank all of the coaches and players, especially the seniors, for your efforts to make adjustments to actually have our seasons. Everyone’s attitudes and resilience made playing possible, so thank you all. Finally for our music and performing arts students, I understand that it is frustrating that the guidance from the state has not been as favorable as the sports guidance. I just want you to know that we are all working extremely hard to advocate for opening up opportunities to practice and perform. I am working with the VPA, and our teachers are working directly with the Secretary of Education to make changes to the guidance. In fact, Mr. Prue is on the statewide committee to update music guidelines, so we are very luck to have him representing our voices and concerns directly to the VDH and AOE. Thank you all for your continued patience and great attitudes while we try to get the guidance changed.
